Job-Hunting
Expenses

Job-hunting expenses you pay to find your first job, or a job in a new line of work, are nondeductible.

But . . . job-hunting costs you pay to find a new position in the same line of work are a Miscellaneous Itemized Deduction subject to the 2% floor.

Specific deductible costs include:

  • resumes, cover letters, typing, printing, envelopes, and postage
  • employment agencies, consultants, headhunters, etc.
  • costs of assembling portfolios of previous work
  • transportation to and from job interviews, headhunters, etc.
  • 50% of Meals and Entertainment associated with job hunting (including costs for entertaining existing clients between positions when you intend to continue doing business with them in your new position)
  • out-of-town Travel, including 50% of meals and entertainment
  • fees for legal, accounting, and tax advice regarding employment contracts

Employer-provided job outplacement assistance is a tax-free working condition fringe benefit so long as it's designed to help you find a new position in the same line of work and you don't have the choice of taking cash instead of the benefit. This benefit includes secretarial service and an office during your job search.

Report job-hunting costs on Schedule A.
