Expenses
Job-hunting expenses you pay
to find your first job, or a job in a new line of work, are nondeductible.
But . . . job-hunting costs you pay to find a new
position in the same line of work are a
Miscellaneous Itemized Deduction
subject to the 2% floor.
Specific deductible costs
include:
- resumes, cover letters, typing, printing,
envelopes, and postage
- employment agencies, consultants,
headhunters, etc.
- costs of assembling portfolios of previous
work
- transportation to and from job interviews,
headhunters, etc.
- 50% of
Meals and Entertainment
associated with job hunting (including costs for entertaining existing
clients between positions when you intend to continue doing business with
them in your new position)
- out-of-town
Travel, including 50% of meals
and entertainment
- fees for legal, accounting, and tax advice
regarding employment contracts
Employer-provided job outplacement
assistance is a tax-free working condition fringe benefit so long as it's
designed to help you find a new position in the same line of work and you
don't have the choice of taking cash instead of the benefit. This benefit
includes secretarial service and an office during your job search.
